What inspired you to start your business?
Personal need! My step-son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum when he was 2 years old. There were not enough services in our community so I have spent the last 15 years building services and resources, both non-profit and for profit.
What challenges have you faced as a woman in business?
As a woman in business, I've encountered several challenges. One of the most persistent is the constant demand to manage time effectively. Balancing home, family, and owning a business, especially when feeling responsible for payroll, is a constant challenge! Additionally, as a small business owner, I constantly navigate the complexities of economically implementing accounting, tax, and legal services - all the things . Keeping up with the rapidly evolving technology landscape adds another layer of challenge to this mix.
How has being a WPO member helped your business?
Being a member of the WPO has been a true lifeline and a "North Star" for my business. Membership has supported me during times when I've felt uncertain, scared, angry, or sad, offering a reminder that I am not facing these challenges alone and encouraged me to “keep the course”. WPO serves as my inspiration, guiding light and bright spot to know that there are so many amazing women working tirelessly and achieving great things. I’m honored to be among the crowd. The WPO serves as a nexus for focusing on, learning, and receiving what I need to be my best. This support has been invaluable, giving me the courage and belief in my work to persevere. It's comforting to know that most WPO members face similar challenges, and fortunately, in our chapter, our ups and downs cycle differently, so there's always someone with strength to spare and share. My personal growth has been enriched through the resources provided by the WPO, especially through the conferences, Harvard continued learning classes, and the relationships I've built with other members. Without the WPO, I would miss out on this support, wealth of knowledge and the extensive network of contacts it has provided.
What is the best piece of business advice that you have ever received?
When someone shows you who they are, you better believe them.
What is your favorite WPO event you've attended? Why?
My favorite events are always the annual convention [WPO Entrepreneurial Excellence Forum]. Learning from the amazing speakers, watching the inspiring list of Fastest 50, and networking with the room full of amazing women inspires me beyond belief!
What lesson have you learned that you can share with other women entrepreneurs?
As a leading entrepreneur, merging your company or introducing new leadership is extremely challenging, especially without maintaining control. It feels like parting with your own creation, with the inherent belief that no one else can nurture it like you. Despite extensive planning and good intentions, my own merger attempt failed, a common outcome among my peers. Many have seen their companies falter, departed under distress, or were forced to completely withdraw. A word of caution to those considering mergers.
